Spetses island is also well known for the  various  types of events & festivals that take place every year, giving glamor & esteem to this little gem of the Saronic Gulf. The most popular refer to the history & culture of the island, whilst others are based on sports, since the island offers a wide range of athletic activities.
Spetsathlon
One of the most impressive sport events is that of Spetsathlon, which has become the most popular multi-sport event in Greece, taking place for the first time in April 2013 and since then it is held every year with great success. Spetsathlon consists of the Triathlon Race including swimming, cycling and running competitions, followed by the awarding process and the receipt of the participation medals for all. This athletic event along with the Spetses Mini Marathon have gradually won the preference of world-class athletes.
Spetses Classic Yacht Regatta
The event that is considered particularly popular in recent years, attracting plenty of people from Greece and abroad, is that of sailing. Spetses Classic Yacht Regatta was founded in 2011 and since then is the most popular race of its kind in Greece, but also one of the most important in the Mediterranean. It is organized every summer, usually in June with participation from sportsmen and businessmen, with over 75 boats and 400 crew members giving spectators the opportunity to enjoy a high level of sailing competitions.
The Armata Festival
Well known for its’ participation in the liberation of Greece from the Otoman Empire, Spetses played the most important role during the war as it was the first island which raised the flag of revolution in 1821 with the assistance of Laskarina Bouboulina, a powerful ship owner at that time, who spent her fortune in arms and ammunition. Locals honor her contribution every year with the celebration of the “Armata”, commemorating the events of the battle of September, including the torching of the Turkish flagship in the harbour.
Spetses Mini Marathon
Spetses mini Marathon is an international 3-day sport event, held every year in October, which includes three foot races and three open-water swimming races as well as events for children. The island and its residents play a major role in the athletic event with their participation in volunteer activities. Drawing over 5,000 competitors across the three days of races, the mini Marathon is open to all sport lovers, fulfilling all needs, either by participating or simply by watching it. Since 2011, the event has won a number of awards, as well as being honored in the Sports Tourism category of 2014 Greek Tourism Awards and according to the Greek press, this has become the biggest annual sport event in Greece outside of Athens.
